Waves arrive quietly against an almost empty shoreline. Nothing extraordinary is happening. And somehow, that becomes the interesting part. Photography can easily become a search for the obvious moment — the spectacular light, the dramatic weather, the subject that immediately announces itself. But some landscapes resist that kind of attention. They don't perform. They simply wait. Soft Horizons grew from those quieter encounters with the coast: moments when weather blurred the boundaries between sea and sky and transformed familiar places into something less certain. Looking through the images together, I began to notice that I wasn't really photographing the horizon at all. I was photographing the space around it. The feeling of looking towards something that cannot quite be reached. Perhaps that is why horizons have always fascinated us. They appear to be a destination, yet they move whenever we move. The closer we travel towards them, the further they retreat. They are both boundary and illusion. On these softer days, even that illusion begins to disappear. There is something strangely peaceful about a landscape without a hard edge. The eye has nowhere particular to stop. Instead, it wanders through layers of water, weather and light. And perhaps we need places like that. Places where things don't have to be sharply defined. Where uncertainty can simply exist. Where the world is allowed to soften around the edges. Sometimes noticing isn't about seeing more.
